Research & Development
Plasta Rei through its central R&D activities has developed and validated a unique technology for recycling post-consumer plastics based on Polyethylene terephthalate PET.
PET is one of the most commonly used plastics, identified by the symbol “1” for the Voluntary Plastic Container Coding System proposed by the Society of the Plastics Industry in 1988. It is used especially in the beverage bottle industry and in fiber production.
The recycling process developed by Plasta Rei takes advantage of chemical recycling technology. the plastic is not treated by conventional mechanical recycling, which causes partial degradation of the polymer due to heat to friction, but is subjected to a cycle of chemical reactions by which the polymer returns to its starting molecules (monomers), and then is purified and subjected to polymerization again as if starting from virgin raw materials.
The innovation lies in the fact that the material, thanks to this process, is not only purified of all those contaminants that are potentially harmful to both the quality and the applications of the product, but the material is also decolorized, without affecting its chemical-physical-mechanical properties, as opposed to the mechanical recycling process.
Thanks to the new Regulation (EU) 2022/1616, which entered into force on October 10, 2022, on recycled plastic materials and articles intended to come into contact with food, following a positive opinion from the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), Plasta Rei will be able to market its recycled plastic granule manufactured through chemical recycling technology, and identified as “Novel Technology.”
